Shahnameh of Ferdowsi, 1010 C.E.The Devil, Disguised as a Cook, Ensnares Zahhak Iblis, the devil, presents himself to King Zahhak disguised as a charming young gourmet cook. Up to that time people had been vegetarians and killing for food was unknown. The cook prepares a series of dishes to ensnare the royal epicure. The feasts begin simply but increase in delicacy day by day. The first night he cooks egg-yolk dishes to give the king vigorous health in a short time. The king thanks the cook for the delicacy of this food. The second night the cook prepares a meal with partridge, gray pheasant, and quail. The third night he serves a dish with chicken and lamb kabab mixed together. The fourth night he sets a glamorous table and serves fillet of veal cooked in saffron, rose water, old wine, and pure musk. By this time the king is literally eating out of the devil's hands and asks how he might express his gratitude. The reply seems innocent, even flattering; the cook wanted only to lay his face and eyes upon the king's shoulder. Zahhak grants the request. Iblis kisses him and vanishes. Suddenly, two ravenous black snakes sprout from Zahhak's shoulders. |
